Brittany and the Bay

Last weekend was a gift.
For the first time since Will was born, I travelled out-of-town without my boys.
Clay took care of Will for 3.5 whole days so I could go see my sister before she graduates from Berkeley's Haas School of Business. And boy did we have a good time.
On Friday, I watched as my sister chaired a HUGE and impressive Global Social Venture Capitalism Competition. I sat in the audience all day long and kept. feeling. inspired.
It was glorious.
I learned so much about business, about social ventures, about the type of work my sister has been doing and wants to focus on more as her career continues. I learned what a successful "pitch" looks and sounds like, what "scale" means, and that taking business risks are more encouraged than playing it safe. And I learned that I LOVE San Francisco and the entire Bay area. GORGEOUS.
Brittany and Phil were amazing hosts and took so much time out of their busy weekends to give me the grand tours of Berkeley and the San Francisco area.
We walked around the Palace of Fine Arts...
 How cute are they?
Phil drove us down Lombard St....
We had dinner and drinks at the INSANE home of one of the Haas professors
(the picture below was taken on one of her four balconies).
And then we went for a hike that was super fun
even though it was super foggy and we later got poison oak
 Again, LOVE these two.
I have decided that if I hit the lottery, I am having surgery to ensure that my right eye stays open in pictures from now on. What is up with my right eye???
 The pout picture
Pretty sure this is where we picked up the poison oak...
...but we also found this awesome tree...
Totally unprovoked :-), Brittany decided to swim on the tree
I find the following series of pictures to be funny
And this picture makes me happy:
 We toured Sausalito and Tiburon
And while I was so excited to take the red-eye back on Sunday night to see my boys Monday morning, I have to admit I *might* have shed a tear or two in the SF airport thinking of how much I love being with my sister, how proud of her I am, and how much I hate living so far away from her. It's funny: when we were growing up, we wanted space space space from each other. And now that we have space space space, all I want is to live next door to this cool chica. Yup, she's a good one.

Girls Weekend!

Phew! Where did April go?
We have been having fun, fun, fun!
First up: girls weekend in the city with my best friends Blaire and Nina
 Holla 318.
We had so much fun spending an entire day exploring the city.
We bought new sunglasses. We ate frozen yogurt.
We walked and walked and walked.
 We bought margaritas for lunch.
 We saw upside-down elephants.
We went to the Strand (English teacher paradise).
 And we hung with Will!
 NINA!
We love you, Nina!
And congrats on becoming an aunt on Monday!!

Ah, girl time is the best!

Protected

Don't you just love it when life hands you a pretty present, all tied up with a bow?

And isn't it even better when it comes out of NOWHERE? :-)

So I have been crushing on something for a week now. I have read all about it online, looked at lots of pictures of it, compared prices, and even dreamed about it one night (not kidding). But it was too expensive and too luxurious for me to even consider placing it in my cute little Amazon shopping cart.

Tory Burch flats? nope.
12 packages of LifeSaver gummis? not even close.
That awesome emerald green messenger bag? try again.

It's a car seat. And it's awesome.

And it's totally out of my price range.

And while I know the differences between a $100 car seat and a $200 car seat might be minuscule, there is a part of me that can't ignore the higher safety rating or the amazing mom reviews that compare the two seats I am considering and highly endorse the more expensive model. And then I look at my beautiful son and try to tune out the news reporting on the latest car accident on the NJ Turnpike and end up closing the computer because morally I can't justify buying the cheaper one but financially I can't justify buying the pricier one. I've got time before we need to make a decision, I tell myself. And then I go play with Will and hug him extra tight and know that money will never be able to buy what matters most to me.

And then last Friday, Good Friday, Will and I were underneath 116th St. in the subway station when I heard my phone ding. An email from Amazon. Someone dear to me had sent me a $100 gift card out of the blue. I about cried. On a day that is all about selfless sacrifice because of overwhelming love, I had once again been reminded that giving is living, that God will provide, that grace is very real and very powerful in my life, especially this year.

But then I started to think about all the other uses for that gift card, most especially that our Will needs new clothes now that our little guy isn't so little any more.

Since then, we have received two packages, one from each of our parents, full of clothes and treats for Will. And once again, I am overwhelmed with the sacrificial, overwhelming, generous love that parents have for their children. Because as we all know, you give a gift to a child and you are really giving that gift to the entire family. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Will happy and warm and loved...

...and safe.

So tonight I ordered that car seat. The more highly-reviewed one. And while I know Will will never appreciate it (and actually might hate it after 12 hours in it on our way from NYC to KY), I have no doubt that when I look back at him in it for days and months to come, I will be visualizing him in the arms of our parents and my special friend who helped make my shopping crush a reality.
Happy Easter from NYC!

Mama Time

Clay kicked me out of the house for two hours, sent me to the Teacher's College library with my computer and my book, and told me to HAVE FUN. Bless him. Because one thing I have learned this year is that I love to go go go with Will and work and projects until I just up and break down. It's like I run out of gas, out of GIVE, and I need to retreat for a few minutes to build myself back up again.

So as I sit here in this lovely academic space for the first time all year, my mind is going crazy with so many thoughts that have little or nothing to do with Thomas the Tank Engine, what's for dinner (ahh I am out of ideas and only five years into my marriage--poor Clay), or the wonderful/neverending online courses I am teaching. And because I have time and because I am also realizing that writing=sanity for your little narrator, I thought I would take this precious opportunity to just write some more random thoughts.

1. Girls, at least this year, need girlfriends. I swear, next to the endlessly patient love of my husband and the amazing sweetness of my son, the girlfriends I have made this year have filled my days with laughter, friendship, and honesty in a way I could have never expected or even hoped for. I don't have many of them here, but I do have Maresa (Mac's mama), Lisa (a fellow recent transplant from VA whom I met at a random music lesson and on the spot we decided to become friends because neither of us had any others at that point), and Jennifer (fellow UVA-er who gracefully pursued my friendship and invited me into the mom's group that I TREASURE every Wednesday morning). What do I miss most about Chattanooga? My girlfriends. What will I miss most about NYC? Those three.

2. Speaking of girlfriends, I have been working on a bit of a secret project for the past three months, and just this week did I hold the end result in my hands:

It's a book! I have been editing and now publishing a collection of my GPS mentor's prayers, and it's finally done! You can find it here if you are interested in previewing it: Praying Life. This was a labor of love for me, and I feel so grateful the book actually got published before Jane retires in May.

3. Speaking of meals, I don't know whether it is our "kitchenette" or our tight food budget or simply my fatigue from being a full-time mom, but I am WORTHLESS when it comes to making yummy meals. Oh, I try, but the end result usually tastes as uninspired as I feel. It's funny, though: I love eating more than ever, and I thoroughly enjoy watching FoodNetwork and reading food blogs for fun. So, so weird.

4. Gifts. I have recently been asked by several friends for suggestions for gifts for new mamas, and it amazes me how quickly I forget what I loved receiving as a pregnant lady and as an over-the-moon but exhausted new mom. One of my best friends is also pregnant (so frickin' excited of her and for them and for this little one who is going to have two of the best parents ever), so I have been thinking a lot about gifts. More for my own future reference more than as advice for anyone,  I thought I would record some ideas:

Pregnant Mama presents: a pedicure, a cute maternity shirt (because mamas especially want and deserve to feel pretty as their bodies change), a sweet newborn outfit or blanket that they can hold to help them visualize their little one, an offer to go for a walk with them sometime (I couldn't get enough of walking in my later months and was so grateful for anyone who would join me), gift card for a date night out with the daddy-to-be. Those date nights will be hard to come by for a little while once the sweet little one is born.

New Mama Presents: Healthy homemade meal, netflix subscription (for all those late nights), lullaby music that doesn't drive parents crazy (I would recommend Jewel's baby CDs. I didn't love her adult work, but her original lullabies are gifts to parents as well as kiddos), go in with friends and provide a cleaning service for a couple of weeks--ah, what a luxury that would be!, favorite baby books parents would also enjoy reading over and over again, something with the baby's name on it (I treasure everything that has Will's name on it--they just feel extra special!), and socks! Baby can never have enough socks!!
But the main present would be time. I don't think exhausted new parents necessarily want to go out on the town right after the baby arrives, but a couple months later, being able to spend some focused time with your spouse knowing that your child is in loving, safe hands is the best present a mom could receive. I remember being so incredibly grateful to both of our parents for giving us date nights when they were in town. I felt badly going out when they were our guests, but I don't think Clay and I would have gone out otherwise.

Young Moms: wine, meal ideas (see above), and toddler socks (I swear someone breaks into our apartment, takes one look around and decides nothing is worth stealing, and then for some reason takes Will's socks because we can't seem to hold onto socks if our life depended on it). Oh, and mama time in the Teacher's College library. Ahhhh.....

5. Clay and I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night. Totally disturbed me. By no means have I ever liked hearing or watching scenes of sexual violence, but ever since becoming a mama, I. cannot. stomach. violence.

6. Reading for Cutting for Stone. Granted, I've only read the Prologue and I have 512 more pages to go before it's due back at the library next week, but man, that Prologue was really good.

7. Clay and I have discussed our hopes and dreams for our home come June or July. Clay wants a nice bathtub. I want a kitchen counter. Will wants "cheese." And Camden, bless his heart, yearns for grass. I think we can handle this wish-list.

8. I am thinking about giving up sodas. Not sure I can do it again. Any thoughts?

9. Will is so darn fun. He wakes up talking and laughing, he smiles all the time, he gives hugs and kisses freely, he loves riding on our shoulders, and he waves to everyone all the time. Yesterday, Will and I went down to meet our friend, Anna, at the Farmer's Market at Union Square and he was AMAZING on the subway there and back. Just amazing. We laughed and played the whole way back (a good 30 minute subway ride) and when I got up for our stop, a man came up to me and said, "You and your precious son just made my day. I love seeing families that happy together." Sigh. I will hold onto that man's comments forever.

10. I love my family. I really, really do. More than ever. It's been almost two hours alone and I am ready to be back with the ones I love.

Love from us to you.
xoxo

Eggcellent Easter

We decided Will and Mac needed their own Easter egg hunt.
So we filled some plastic eggs with animal crackers, craisins, and the occasional M&M...
headed up to Sakura Park where the flowers are looking egg-stra pretty...
and hid those eggs in plain sight.
They ate it up...
especially when they figured out that some eggs held chocolate.
They even wore matching vests for the occasion.
The parents stood back and marveled that we got to spend our days with these two cuties.
The hunt may have lasted for all of 15 minutes...
and when the eggs were all finally empty, a bottom lip or two might have emerged,
but on the whole, it was a smashing success.
We might just have to name our next child Mac. That's how in love with this boy I am.
"Hey, Mac, buddy, let's do it again sometime."
Mac, Julia, Blair, and Maresa
Hoppy Easter 2012!
